Dejen Collapse Spurs Political Upheaval

The reverberations of Embasora’s withdrawal from the Dejen Compact are still being felt throughout the Republic. Despite the fact that contentions with Thanh-Jenal were cited to be the primary factor, the nation’s absence from the long-held treaty casts doubts on the future. Citizens continue to wonder what this will mean for Sabmadi’s future, and particularly for the Rose League.

The Sabmadi Rose League (SRL), headed by current Chancellor Q, has enjoyed an astounding level of popularity and power for a few decades. Fulfilling his campaign promise of stability almost immediately, Q has elevated the League from a minor player in the political scene to the premier voice of internationalism—one that has forced all other major parties to adjust their strategies going forward.

However, the League’s level of public trust is wavering as Embasora's exit spells doom for the proposed Dejen Commonwealth, which has been supported heavily by the Chancellor, one of its primary authors. Some cities have had their support plummet drastically. However, analysts say that this doesn’t represent a clear transfer of power from one end of the Senate to the other.

"It isn’t that simple," says Malak Tenoli, domestic social analyst at Babel Galactica. "While the SRL has no shortage of opponents, the Dejen project's failure cannot be easily converted into political capital. Otherwise we would have seen major power grabs from the League's contemporaries by now."

Even the SRL’s main rival, the protectionist Sanguine Coalition (SC), has been meek in their response. Many speculate that this is a case of hedging their bets: with the Dejen project out of the way, Chancellor Q may double down on the Zivan Orbital Ring Project (ZORP). Despite being an international initiative, ZORP is heavily supported by the Coalition for becoming a source of "Zivan unity and pride." Paradoxically, keeping the opposition in power, at least for a while, may lead to the best outcome for them.

In between the two opposite political groups lies the Solidarity and Progress Party (SolPro), a main supporter of Chancellor Q’s efforts. Their relationship has been damaged somewhat; the party spokesperson has on multiple occasions reminded the SRL that their support is based on the success of the Republic’s diplomatic forays. Like the SC however, SolPro has opted not to escalate.

That isn't to say that Chancellor Q has not needed to adjust. A few days after Embasora broke the news, Q had announced that Cannakombu would be legal for sale and public consumption. This placated (some would argue appease) both the general populace and a good portion of the opposition, giving the SRL valuable time to recuperate. After that came the consolidation of the intelligence agencies into SIGMA from Director King, pulling the public eye elsewhere.

Similarly, the talks and later signing of the Cooperation Agreement between Maltuan and Sabmadi would serve to appease and draw attention away from the situation in Dejen, though it is hardly as detailed or in-depth as the Dejen Commonwealth was, it still buys the League and Q more time to figure things out at home and keep international relations on the up, overall.

The chaotic fluctuations of the Antares Confederacy add a final layer of uncertainty. Similar societal aftershocks have emerged in the member states of Tehnali and Thanh-Jenal, with consequences that seemingly cannot be predicted.

Despite this, a handful of corporate prediction engines have attempted to run simulations on the Dejen situation ever since the collapse. The outcome they foretell is equal parts foreboding and perplexing: Sabmadi may revert to a state where stability will be prioritized over all other mandates and projects. But even with quadrillions of calculations behind it, it is still only one of many possible paths into the future.

The Confederacy Senate's a busy place, and keeping track of everything is pretty difficult.

That's what BK Coverage is for.
